Summary

School Liaisons are located at each installation and are the central point of contact for commanders, military families, and local school systems on school-related matters for grades Pre-K-12. The School Liaison Office (SLO) advocates, advises, and builds alliances to help address education concerns, challenges, or issues of the Total Force and offer a network to educate and provide information or referral for both military families and school districts. Services provided but are not limited to: Transition Support (School Districts & Boundaries), Alternative Schooling Options/Support (Private, Parochial, Charter, virtual school and Homeschool), Deployment Support, College, Career & Military Readiness, Scholarship & Grant Resources, Parent Workshops, School District Professional Development and Military Interstate Compact Compliance Support. School Liaisons build, sustain and are the continuity in education-community partnerships.

Eligibility

All military-connected members are eligible to use the School Liaison's services. School Liaisons serve DoD Total Force members, DoD Civilians, Retirees, Guard/Reserve and eligible family members to include NOAA, USPHS, JROTC and Recruiters located off base, foreign national employees and contractors. SLO services are open to all Educators who service Military Students and Community Partners within the Pre-K-12 Education realm.

Core Focus Areas

Installation, School, and Community Communication: School Liaisons are installation subject matter experts to Commander/Command Staff/parents for all local Pre-12 education issues regarding military child education. They facilitate communication for parents that student is experiencing challenges within a school setting. In order to address issues at the local level and build support with Child and Youth Education Services chart Community Stakeholders, many installations have established educational town hall, summits or educational working groups lead by the School Liaisons and include those active stakeholders in their communities.

Homeschool Support: School Liaisons share information on homeschool issues, concerns, local policies, and regulations of state/local education agencies, and connect home school families to their community.

Community Relations, Partnerships, and Outreach: School Liaisons create a network of parents, community partners, and military/civilian personnel to support installation/community and school systems.

JROTC, STEM, Scholarship Opportunities: School Liaisons leverage installation/school resources (e.g., Education and Training Flight) to provide military-connected students access to post-secondary information and opportunities.

Special Education Navigation: School Liaisons leverage installation, school, and community resources to assist Families in navigating special education law and policy, parental and student self-advocacy, Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and 504 plans.
