Military Tuition Assistance (MilTA)
Benefit Fact Sheet
The Military Tuition Assistance (MilTA) Program provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty education programs in support of an Airman and Guardian's professional and personal self-development goals. MilTA is authorized under U.S.C. 10, Section 2007, and implemented by Department of Defense Instruction 1322.25, Voluntary Education Programs. All Service members (officers, enlisted) on active duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve on active duty (pursuant to U.S. Code Title 10 or Title 32), are authorized to participate in the MilTA program.
Service members on active duty are eligible for Military Tuition Assistance.
The Military Tuition Assistance Program supports Service members pursuing their voluntary, off-duty education goals. MilTA will fund up to $4,500 per year for courses leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree. Consult DAFI 36-2670, Total Force Development for more details.
The Department of the Air Force (DAF) will pay all or a portion of the charges to accredited educational institutions that have signed the Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding in pursuit of approved degree programs. When an educational institution's tuition is $250 or less per semester hour (or $166.66 per quarter hour), the DAF will pay 100 percent of the amount charged by the institution for up to the $4,500 per person per fiscal year. The DAF will pay up to $250 per semester hour and $166 per quarter hour not to exceed that annual cap of $4500 per fiscal year Before obtaining MilTA, Service members must be approved by their supervisors, via the Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC) no earlier than 45 calendar days, and no later than 7 calendar days, before their course start date.
Current DAF policy limits MilTA to 124 semester hours/186 quarter hours for an undergraduate degree, and 42 semester hours/63 quarter hours for a graduate degree. The graduate program cannot exceed 42 semester hours/63 quarter hours to include undergraduate pre-requisites on an evaluated degree plan.
To remain eligible for MilTA, students must maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 ("C" average) or above for undergraduate, and 3.0 ("B" average) for graduate-level courses. Reimbursement actions will be initiated for missing grades 90 days after the term end date.
Active Duty officers incur an Active Duty Service Commitment of two years, and Reserve Component officers must agree to remain on active duty for a two year period or a Reserve Service Commitment of four years. The length of the commitment is calculated from the date of completion of the last course for which MilTA was used.
