Summary

The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), located at Wright Patterson AFB, is the Department of the Air Force's leader for advanced, multi-disciplinary academic education, as well as its institution for initial technical and professional continuing education. A component of Air University and Air Education and Training Command, AFIT provides innovative, defense-focused graduate education and related research, and operationally-relevant initial skills training and professional continuing education to sustain the technological supremacy of America's air, space, and cyber forces.

AFIT accomplishes this mission through four schools: the Graduate School of Engineering and Management, the School of Systems and Logistics, the School of Strategic Force Studies, and the Civil Engineer School. Through its Civilian Institution Programs Office, AFIT also manages the educational programs of Airmen and Guardians enrolled in civilian universities, research centers, teaching hospitals, and industrial organizations.

Applying:

AFIT applications are processed year-round. All Service members are strongly encouraged to apply anytime versus waiting for the annual "calls for volunteers" for advanced academic degree assignments. Application procedures vary by branch for Department of the Air Force personnel, requirements are:

  • Officers: The Force Development Teams at HQ AFPC consider Air Force officers for Air Force sponsored, graduate educational opportunities, and recommend the right officer at the right time for the right reason. The specific graduate areas in which the Air Force will sponsor (i.e., fully fund) a student for an advanced degree are determined by the Air Force.

  • Enlisted: The “Enlisted-to-AFIT” program is a unique element of enlisted professional development. In conjunction with other training and education programs, resident AFIT sponsored science, engineering, and management graduate degree opportunities further develop noncommissioned officers' technical education and skills. This program is intended to enhance combat capability through career field core competency augmentation and to provide the Air and Space Forces with a source of highly proficient NCOs, technically experienced in their career field and highly educated through AFIT graduate degree programs.

Prospective students must meet service eligibility standards and receive a letter of academic eligibility from the Office of Admissions and the Registrar prior to selection and assignment to the Graduate School of Engineering and Management. Interested NCOs should apply for an academic review anytime. HQ Air Force Personnel Center calls for applicants in November each year.

The Graduate School of Engineering and Management provides an online application. See the AFIT admissions page for specific application and registration information on each school.

In addition to the application form there are several academic documents required for admission to an AFIT graduate program.
